This region has the most approaches of all regions in Japan, with a normal of 7.7 per year according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) (1991–2020). In the 1951–2025 records, approaches are concentrated from July to September, and November also counts 53 days in total; the typhoon season here is longer than in other regions.

An "approach" is counted on each date when the center of a typhoon came within 300 km of any staffed weather station in Okinawa, following the JMA definition. Preliminary values for the current year are not included.
