This region has the fewest approaches of all regions in Japan, with a normal of 1.9 per year according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) (1991–2020). In the 1951–2025 records, approaches are concentrated from late August to September, and total approaches in October amount to only 14 days in 75 years.

An "approach" is counted on each date when the center of a typhoon came within 300 km of any staffed weather station in Hokkaido, following the JMA definition. Preliminary values for the current year are not included.
