Typhoon approach calendar
Period: finalized records for 1951–2025 (75 years)
Which regions has the center of a typhoon approached, and when over the course of a year? We have compiled 75 years of finalized records, 1951–2025, into a calendar of dates for each region. There is also a simulator for finding past typhoons by date range.
Key points from 75 years of records
- The regions with the most approaches are Okinawa (1,347 days in total), Izu and Ogasawara Islands (738 days in total), and Amami (623 days in total).
- By month, approaches are most frequent in August (the values for each month are at the end of each row in the calendar below).
All figures are totals of finalized records for 1951–2025. The list by region is below.
Calendar of approaches to Japan by date
By date, approaches were most frequent on August 8: 34 times in 1951–2025 (75 years).
Uncolored cells mean 0 approaches on that date in the past 75 years. "All of Japan" counts the days when a typhoon approached any region.
Figures in the text are based on records collected as of September 2026 (1951–2025 totals).
An "approach" is counted on each date when the center of a typhoon came within 300 km of any staffed weather station in the region, following the JMA definition. Preliminary values for the current year are not included.
These are statistics compiled from observations for 1951–2025 (75 years), not a weather forecast for any particular day. For the latest forecasts, see the JMA website.
A rough view in 5 areas
Monthly records for the 13 official regions grouped into 5 areas: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa and Amami. A day when the same typhoon approached several regions in one area counts as 1 day. The Izu and Ogasawara Islands are not part of Honshu here (shown separately).
