Dry-day rate calendar for June

Period: observations for 1996–2025 (30 years)

This is the month of the rainy season. In the 1996–2025 records, the area with many rainy days spreads from Okinawa and Amami to Honshu, and the dry-day rates in western / eastern Japan fall to some of the lowest levels in the annual cycle. Hokkaido does not drop as much as Honshu, so the north–south gap shows up large.

The "dry-day rate" is the share of years in which a given day had no precipitation (rain or snow) of 1 mm or more (daily rainfall under 1 mm, smoothed over the 4 days before and after).

These are statistics compiled from observations for 1996–2025 (30 years), not a weather forecast for any particular day. For the latest forecasts, see the JMA website.

"2 days in a row" and "3 days in a row" are the monthly averages of the share of years in which it stayed dry for 2 / 3 days starting that day (counted from the actual consecutive records, not by multiplying each day's share). They are a guide for multi-night trips and outdoor plans. "Windy days" is the share of days with a daily mean wind speed of 5 m/s or more. The sunshine averages include estimates from March 2021 onward at some stations.

What makes June distinctive

The June records split cleanly between north and south. In measurements over the 30 years 1996–2025, the stations with high dry-day rates were in Hokkaido, Otaru (74.9%) / Hakodate (74.2%) / Sapporo (73.8%) / Wakkanai (73.3%), joined by Chichijima Island (74.4%) in the Ogasawara Islands. The low ones, by contrast, clustered in Southern Kyushu: Yakushima Island (39.5%) / Nishimera (42.6%) / Aburatsu (45%). This is the season when the front that brings the rainy-season rain stretches from Honshu toward the southwest, and only Hokkaido, outside it, kept its values. Among major stations, Kagoshima was at 48.1%, and its share of 3 straight days without precipitation thinned to 17.7%.

Even in the south, Naha's numbers were different. Its monthly average was 59.5%, but its 3-day figure was 34.9%, above Tokyo (28.9%) / Nagoya (27.7%). This is because in places where the rainy season ends earlier than on Honshu, dry days lined up together. Temperatures spread from an average high of 31°C at Ishigakijima Island to 15.6°C at Nemuro. Whether you want to avoid heat or rain, June points destinations to the north. Days with a daily mean wind speed of 5 m/s or more were high on the southern sea side, at Cape Muroto (70.1%) / Naha (57.4%).

The record values in this commentary are as compiled in September 2026, and the normals are based on 1996–2025 (30 years).
