Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Yamanashi

Yamanashi Prefecture's heat is concentrated in the Kofu Basin. The prefecture's record high is 40.7°C at Kofu on August 10, 2013, followed by 40.6°C the next day, the 11th, and 40.4°C was recorded on July 21, 2004. This 40.7°C ranks 20th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, and the August maximum on the 30-year average for 1996–2025, 33.3°C, ranks 10th from the top, figures that show heat pooling at the bottom of a basin at an elevation of 273 m.

Another trait of Yamanashi is how sharply the temperature worlds divide within the same prefecture. At Lake Kawaguchi, at an elevation of 860 m, the record low of -22.1°C was observed on January 31, 1936, ranking 23rd from the bottom among all the stations covered on this site. The average August maximum is 28.4°C, 4.9°C lower than at Kofu, and the average January minimum is -5.7°C, 4.7°C apart from the -1°C of Nanbu along the Fuji River.

The dryness of the sky contrasts between the north and south of the prefecture. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 75.7% for the year at Kofu and reaches 87.9% in January, bringing out the long runs of clear winter weather inland. Nanbu, open toward the Pacific side, has the lowest annual share among the stations covered here at 69.4%, and it also holds the daily rainfall record of 532 mm, set on October 12, 2019, while Lake Kawaguchi's is 463.5 mm on August 16, 1983, so the records of heavy rain gather in the southern half of the prefecture.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Yamanashi (Kofu)

The normals for Kofu represent the stations in Yamanashi. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (°C) and precipitation in mm. Blank cells have no normal.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kofu changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
