The climate of Okinawa
In Okinawa Prefecture, open to the sea on all four sides, summer temperatures have a ceiling. The record high among the stations covered here is 36°C at Naha, observed on July 19, 2024. Over the 30 years of 1996–2025, the average August maximum spans a range of only 0.7°C, from 32.1°C at Ishigakijima Island to 31.4°C at Miyakojima Island. Miyakojima Island's record high is 35.3°C on July 16, 1971, and as of August 2026 the same date has held the top spot for more than half a century.
The lower limit in winter also stays high. The prefecture's record low is 2.9°C at Kumejima Island, dating back to January 20, 1963. Nago has 3.4°C from February 5, 1967, and neither value reached below freezing. The average January minimum is 16.7°C at Tokorono and Ishigakijima Island against 13.7°C at Nago, a range within the prefecture of 3°C. At Ishigakijima Island, the average August minimum reaches 27.4°C.
Rain, on the other hand, falls hard. On September 13, 2008, 765 mm fell at Yonagunijima Island and 573 mm at Tokorono, and the Yonagunijima Island value became the prefecture's daily rainfall record. Kumejima Island has 577.5 mm from September 12, 2001, and Naha 468.9 mm from October 16, 1959. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 47.3% at Tokorono in February and 47.8% at Yonagunijima Island in December, so rainy days line up even in winter.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.
Monthly normals for Okinawa (Naha)
The normals for Naha represent the stations in Okinawa. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.
Temperature (monthly normals)

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Naha changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
