Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Kagoshima

Stretching from the mainland to islands far to the southwest, Kagoshima Prefecture does not have a single winter face. Over the 30 years of 1996–2025, the average January minimum spans as much as 11.9°C, from 14.2°C at Okinoerabu to 2.3°C at Kimotsuki-Maeda on the Osumi Peninsula. On the islands, the cold stays very mild: the record low at Yakushima Island is 0.7°C on February 27, 1981, and at Naze 3.1°C on February 12, 1901, both values that never reached below freezing.

In contrast, the record low among the stations covered here is -6.7°C in the city of Kagoshima, dating back to February 28, 1923. On the heat side, Kimotsuki-Maeda observed 39.2°C on August 2, 2026, the prefecture's record high. The city of Kagoshima's average August maximum is 33°C, 16th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, but the record high is 34.9°C at Okinoerabu and 35.4°C at Yakushima Island, so the summers of islands surrounded by the sea have a ceiling.

Rainfall is especially heavy on the southern islands. The prefecture's daily rainfall record is 622 mm at Naze, observed on October 20, 2010. Yakushima Island has 557.3 mm from August 27, 1942, and Akune 555.5 mm from July 23, 1971. At Yakushima Island, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is only 54.6% for the year, falling to 39.5% in June.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Kagoshima (Kagoshima)

The normals for Kagoshima represent the stations in Kagoshima. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kagoshima changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
