The climate of Oita

In Oita Prefecture, summer heat gathers not on the coast but at inland Hita. Over the 30 years of 1996–2025, the average August maximum is 33.8°C, as high as 4th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. The record high is 40°C on July 27, 2026, followed by 39.9°C on August 13, 2018, and 39.6°C on August 2, 2026.

That same Hita becomes the coldest place among the stations covered here in winter. Its -10.8°C on January 19, 1945, is the lowest among them, and it also observed -10.7°C on January 13, 1943. The average January minimum is -0.2°C, below freezing, 2.8°C lower than the 2.6°C of the city of Oita, facing Beppu Bay. This is a basin that collects the effects of radiative cooling.

The heavy rain records are even older. The daily rainfall record among the stations covered here is 443.7 mm in the city of Oita, dating back to August 10, 1908. At Hita, the highest is 336 mm on July 5, 2017. In the city of Oita, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 73.4% for the year, rising to 86.4% in December but falling to 57.7% in June.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Oita changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
