Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Nagasaki

In Nagasaki Prefecture, with its intricate islands and peninsulas, records at distant stations sometimes cluster on the same date. Sasebo's 39.1°C, Fukue's 36.8°C, and Mt. Unzen's 34.3°C were all observed on August 3, 2026, and Sasebo's value is the record high among the stations covered here. At Sasebo, 38.4°C followed on August 6 of the same year and 38.3°C on the 7th.

Heavy rain also crossed the prefecture over consecutive days. On July 23, 1982, the city of Nagasaki observed 448 mm, and the next day, the 24th, Mt. Unzen observed 482 mm and Kuchinotsu 306 mm; Mt. Unzen's value remains the prefecture's daily rainfall record. Izuhara on Tsushima holds an old record of 392.5 mm from September 24, 1916, and Hirado one of 406.9 mm from July 13, 1959.

In winter, the cold air of February 16, 1977, left its mark across the prefecture: Mt. Unzen's -12.8°C, Sasebo's -6.1°C, and Hirado's -5.8°C are all records from this day. Mt. Unzen, at an elevation of 678 m, has an average August maximum of 27.4°C over the 30 years of 1996–2025 and an average January minimum of -0.8°C, a gap that widens to 5.1°C against the 4.3°C of Hirado.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Nagasaki (Nagasaki)

The normals for Nagasaki represent the stations in Nagasaki. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (°C) and precipitation in mm. Blank cells have no normal.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Nagasaki changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
