The climate of Tokushima
Tokushima Prefecture's rain gathers on the southeastern slopes of the Shikoku Mountains. At Kito, at an elevation of 363 m, 579 mm of rain fell in a single day on July 19, 2011, the prefecture's daily rainfall record. Over the 30 years of 1996–2025, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is only 50.3% in June and 65.1% over the year, which suggests land that lives side by side with rain.
The city of Tokushima, open to the Kii Channel, has a different rhythm. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 73.2% for the year, rising to 83.6% in January. Its average August maximum of 32.5°C ranks 35th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, and its record high is 38.4°C on July 15, 1994. Heavy rain of 471.5 mm was also recorded on August 2, 1891.
Temperatures at Kito plainly reflect the effect of elevation. The average August maximum is 30.9°C, lower than the 32.5°C of the city of Tokushima. The average January minimum falls to -2.1°C, a wide gap from the 2.9°C of the city of Tokushima. Even so, in August 2020 the temperature reached 39°C on both the 16th and the 18th, and on February 8, 1984, it fell to -10.9°C. A wide range of heat and cold is packed into a single spot in the mountains.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Tokushima changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
