Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Yamaguchi

In Yamaguchi Prefecture, winter mildness and summer heat reside at different stations. At Shimonoseki, facing the Kanmon Strait, the average January minimum over the 30 years of 1996–2025 is 4.7°C. The inland city of Yamaguchi has 0.4°C, so even within the prefecture, how low winter temperatures go clearly differs. Surrounded by the sea, Shimonoseki has an average August maximum of only 31.6°C, but in exchange its average minimum for the same month is a high 25.9°C, making it a place where the temperature is slow to fall even at night.

The city of Yamaguchi, in the center of the prefecture, has basin-like terrain that traps heat. Its average August maximum of 32.9°C ranks 19th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, and it observed 39.4°C on August 3, 2026. The previous day had also recorded 39.1°C. In winter it fell to -8.9°C on February 18, 1977, the record low among the stations covered here.

Hagi, facing the Sea of Japan, has a different character because of its many days with rain. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 67.7% for the year, highest in October at 73.2% and falling to 62.9% in June. The torrential rain record belongs to Shimonoseki: 336.7 mm on June 25, 1904, the most among the stations covered here. Hagi also observed 255 mm on September 21, 1999.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Shimonoseki changed on June 27, 1996; December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
