Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Okayama

The Okayama Plain, open to the Seto Inland Sea, is squeezed from north and south by the Chugoku Mountains and the Shikoku Mountains, a position that rain clouds have trouble reaching. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 76.2% for the year in the city of Okayama, rising to 85.2% in January. Even in June, in the rainy season, 65.8% of days are dry, and a local culture that has long spoken of its sunny weather with pride shows directly in the numbers.

That sunny weather is directly tied to the summer heat. The city of Okayama's average August maximum is 33.4°C, 8th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. The record high is 39.5°C, set on August 5, 2025. The city of Okayama also observed 39.3°C on August 7, 1994, suggesting that the heat on the plain is no accident of one particular year.

Tsuyama, in the north of Okayama Prefecture, lies in a basin at an elevation of 146 m and holds the cold extreme. The -12.8°C recorded on January 24, 1963, is the lowest among the stations covered here, and its average January minimum of -1.5°C is far below the 0.9°C of the city of Okayama. That same basin rose to 39.2°C on August 1, 2026. The highest daily rainfall among the stations covered here, 234.2 mm on September 17, 1945, is also at this station.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Okayama changed on March 25, 1996; December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008; March 5, 2015 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
