Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Shimane

The record low among the Shimane Prefecture stations covered here was set by a single cold wave. The -12.5°C observed at Hikawa on the Izumo Plain on February 9, 2018, ranks 60th from the bottom among all the stations covered on this site, far below the -7.7°C of the previous day. Temperature statistics at this station only began in January 2003, and cold air flowing onto the plain at an elevation of 2 m left an extreme point in a short record.

Summer looks different in the east and west of the prefecture. Matsue's average August maximum over the 30 years of 1996–2025 is 32°C, the highest among the stations covered here, and its record high is 38.5°C on August 1, 1994. Hamada, facing the Sea of Japan, has an average of only 30.9°C for the same month, yet it reached 39°C on August 7, 2026, and holds the record high among the stations covered here. Its 394.5 mm on July 15, 1988, is the prefecture's daily rainfall record.

Saigo in Oki shows the calm of an island surrounded by the sea. Its average August maximum is 30.2°C, the lowest among the stations covered here, and its record high is 36°C on August 2, 2026. It is followed by 35.8°C on August 14, 1994, and 35.7°C on August 24, 2026. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation rises to 75.7% in May and falls to 38% in January. The -8.9°C of February 26, 1981, is a record showing that strong cold air reaches this island too.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Matsue changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
