The climate of Tottori
The stations in Tottori Prefecture largely share the same seasonal rhythm. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is highest in May at Sakai, Shiotsu, Koyama, and Yonago, all reaching the 70% range. The city of Tottori, the prefectural capital, alone peaks in August, at 69.1%, with May slightly lower at 68.6%. The lowest, conversely, is in winter: the city of Tottori falls to 36.3% in January, and Sakai to 37.7%. Over the year as well, at 57.2% in the city of Tottori and 60.3% in Yonago, the whole prefecture spends long stretches under damp skies.
Summer records sometimes overlap on the same day. August 1, 2022, was the day when Sakai's 38.5°C, Yonago's 38.9°C, and Shiotsu's 37.5°C all became their record highs. The prefecture's record high is 39.6°C in the city of Tottori, set on August 7, 2026. The city of Tottori's average August maximum over the 30 years of 1996–2025 is 32.9°C, 19th from the top among all the stations covered on this site.
The coldest extreme was set during the Meiji era. Sakai's record low is -9.7°C on January 27, 1904, the lowest among the stations covered here. Temperature statistics at this station began in January 1883, and its daily rainfall record is also old, 290.2 mm on August 23, 1894, so it has held the extremes among the stations covered here since long ago. Yonago fell to -9.4°C on February 14, 1942, and the cold air of February 26, 1981, also left records near the top of the lists in the city of Tottori and at Shiotsu.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Tottori changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
