Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Wakayama

Cape Shiono, at the southern tip of Honshu, shows how little temperatures move in a place embraced by the sea. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 30°C and the January minimum 5°C, so both summer and winter have their edges rounded off. Even the record high is only 36.1°C, on August 16, 2020, ranking 152nd from the top among all the stations covered on this site. Temperature statistics began in January 1913, and 35.6°C on July 14, 1915, is the 2nd-highest record as of August 2026.

Elsewhere in Wakayama Prefecture, at Shingu near the mouth of the Kumano River, the top highs are concentrated in 2024. The record high is 39.6°C on July 8, 2024, the highest among the stations covered here. The 2nd and 3rd are also from 2024, 39.3°C on August 16 and July 29, so the top records line up in a single year. In winter, the average January maximum is a high 11.9°C, so warmth and fierce heat live side by side.

The eastern side of the prefecture also stands out for its rainfall. At Nishikawa in the mountains, 626 mm fell on September 3, 2011, the prefecture's daily rainfall record. Shingu's 532 mm is from October 22, 2017. At Nishikawa, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 63.6% for the year, dropping to 47.5% in June. This station also has the strongest cold among the stations covered here, -6.9°C on January 23, 1981, and its average January minimum is 6°C apart from that of Cape Shiono.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Wakayama changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
