Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Nara

The city of Nara's heat records are packed into just 3 days in August 1994. In the city of Nara, the record high is 39.3°C on the 8th, and the 2nd and 3rd are both 39.2°C, on the 7th and 6th, so the temperature reached the 39°C range three days in a row. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 33.3°C, 10th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. This is land where heat easily pools in a basin surrounded by mountains.

Head into the south of Nara Prefecture, and the heat does not ease even as the elevation rises. At Kazeya, at an elevation of 301 m, 39.9°C was observed on August 2, 2024, ranking 33rd from the top among all the stations covered on this site. At Kamikitayama, at an elevation of 334 m, 39.6°C was recorded on both July 25 and July 31, 2026. However, Kamikitayama's average August maximum is 31.1°C, 2.2°C below the city of Nara in the basin, so its character is that only the spikes on hot days are sharp.

On the southern slopes of the Kii Mountains, the amount of rain is on another scale. On September 3, 2011, 661 mm fell at Kamikitayama and 591.5 mm at Kazeya on the same day, and both remain the daily rainfall records at those stations. At Kamikitayama, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 64% for the year, falling to 52.2% in June. Kamikitayama also holds the record low among the stations covered here, -9.3°C on February 28, 1981. The same late-February cold air also left records near the top of the lists at Kazeya and the city of Nara.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Nara changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008; March 9, 2017 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
