Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Hyogo

Hyogo Prefecture borders both the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea, and the difference between its north and south shows clearly in its skies. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 55.1% for the year at Toyooka on the Sea of Japan side, falling to 32.4% in January. Himeji on the Seto Inland Sea side, by contrast, has 74.9% for the year and 84.9% in January, with sunny days in a row. The same prefecture splits into different weather before and after the winter monsoon crosses the mountains.

Heat records gather inland. The 41.2°C observed at Kaibara in Tanba on July 30, 2025, ranks 4th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. It is followed by 39.2°C on August 8, 1994, and 38.9°C on July 29, 2025. This basin at an elevation of 98 m also has the strongest winter cold among the stations covered here: on the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the January minimum is -0.7°C, as much as 3.8°C below Kobe near the sea.

Being on the Sea of Japan side does not mean a cool summer. Toyooka's average August maximum is 33.1°C, 15th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, and it reached 39.7°C on August 23, 2024. Yet the record low among the stations covered here also belongs to Toyooka: -12.5°C on January 19, 1936. Among them, Sumoto on Awaji Island has the lowest August average at 31.5°C, and its 323 mm on September 20, 2011, is the highest daily rainfall.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Hyogo (Kobe)

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kobe changed on September 1, 1999; March 28, 2007; December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
