Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Osaka

The city of Osaka has numbers that fit the saying that its summers are hot both day and night. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 33.9°C, 3rd from the top among all the stations covered on this site. The average minimum for the same month is 25.9°C, and day after day the morning arrives without the temperature having fully dropped overnight. Temperature statistics began in January 1883, making this a station where you can trace over the long term how summer in a big city has changed.

Interestingly, the extremes are not as high as the averages would suggest. The record high is 39.1°C on August 8, 1994, ranking 60th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. It is followed by 38.9°C on August 5, 2021, and 38.7°C on July 29, 2025, but the temperature has never reached 40°C. Summer in this city is less about standout single days than about piling up many days at a high level.

Winter is mild even within Kinki. The January averages are a maximum of 9.7°C and a minimum of 3°C, placing it among the stations covered on this site where mornings stay relatively mild. Even so, there were days when it fell to -7.5°C on January 28, 1945, and to -7.1°C on January 25, 1891. Rain is on the low side all year, and the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 73.2%. The wettest month is June, when that share drops to 62.4%, and the daily rainfall record, 250.7 mm on June 26, 1957, also falls in that month.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Osaka changed on February 24, 1999; December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008; February 13, 2015 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
