Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.
The climate of Kyoto
The city of Kyoto's summer strength shows not in a standout single day but in how high every day runs. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 34°C, ranking 2nd from the top among all the stations covered on this site. The record high, on the other hand, is only 39.8°C, reached on 2 days, August 8, 1994, and July 19, 2018. Close behind is 39.7°C on July 23, 2026. This is the result of a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides holding in the heat.
That same basin got bitterly cold in the Meiji era. The record low is -11.9°C on January 16, 1891, ranking 66th from the bottom among all the stations covered on this site. It is followed by -11.6°C on February 1, 1894, and -11°C on January 26, 1904, so the lowest values are all records from the Meiji era. The city of Kyoto's temperature statistics began in November 1880, making it the station with the longest record that can be traced in Kyoto Prefecture.
Head to the north of the prefecture and the sky becomes much heavier. At Maizuru, facing Wakasa Bay, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 57.9% for the year, falling to 42% in January, which looks like a different climate from the annual 71.3% of the city of Kyoto. Its daily rainfall record is 445.5 mm on September 25, 1953, the most in the prefecture. Inland, Fukuchiyama observed 40.6°C on July 30, 2025, ranking 21st from the top among all the stations covered on this site.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kyoto changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
