Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Shiga

Shiga Prefecture's skies show that it is a place that turns cloudier in winter than in summer. At Hikone, the share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is lowest in January, at 56.1%, and conversely highest in August, at 72.6%. For the year it is 64.3%. Rainy and snowy days pile up in winter, when the northwesterly seasonal wind crosses the lake from the Sea of Japan. The daily rainfall record is 596.9 mm on September 7, 1896, which came from heavy autumn rain.

The cold records cluster in the first half of the 20th century. The record low is -11.3°C on January 27, 1904, ranking 74th from the bottom among all the stations covered on this site. It is followed by -10°C on January 6, 1923, and -9.3°C on January 6, 1938, all from before World War II. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, too, January has a maximum of 7.2°C and a minimum of 1°C, values on the low side within Kinki.

Summer is a little unexpected. The record high is 37.7°C on July 26, 2014, ranking 120th from the top among all the stations covered on this site, only a modest level for an inland area where stations in the 40°C class line up. Even so, the average August maximum is 32.4°C, 41st from the top. There are few days that break through; summer on the east shore of the lake is a steady run of hot days. Right below come 37.6°C on August 26, 2026, and 37.5°C on August 2, 1942, summers more than 80 years apart side by side.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Shiga (Hikone)

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (°C) and precipitation in mm. Blank cells have no normal.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Hikone changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008; May 18, 2011 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
