Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Gifu

Gifu Prefecture posts numbers worthy of being called the home of Japan's heat. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum at Tajimi is 34.2°C, the highest value among all the stations covered on this site. The city of Gifu, on the Nobi Plain, follows at 33.7°C in 5th place, and Mino along the Nagara River at 33.2°C in 13th, showing that mountain-ringed basins and the plain form layers of heat in the southern half of the prefecture.

The record highs, too, are crowded into the 40°C range. Kanayama along the Hida River recorded 41°C on August 6, 2018, and Mino 41°C on August 8 of the same summer; these 2 rank 9th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. Tajimi's 40.9°C was set on August 16, 2007, followed by 40.8°C the next day, the 17th. On July 25, 2026, Mino observed 40.8°C and Tajimi 40.7°C, now the 2nd-highest and 3rd-highest in their respective records.

Move to the north of the prefecture and a winter awaits that seems to belong to a different prefecture. At Takayama in Hida, the record low of -25.5°C was observed on February 11, 1939, ranking 13th from the bottom among all the stations covered on this site. The average January minimum is -4.7°C, 5.4°C lower than the 0.7°C of the city of Gifu. Takayama's annual share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 60.7%, the lowest among the stations covered here, a quiet sign that it lies on the path of snow clouds.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Gifu changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
