Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Ishikawa

Ishikawa Prefecture's heat records are split almost evenly between Komatsu and Kanazawa on the Kaga plain. The prefecture's record high is 40.3°C at Komatsu on August 4, 2025, and the same station also observed 40°C on August 10, 2023. This 40.3°C ranks 24th from the top among all the stations covered on this site. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, too, the August maximum is 31.7°C at Kanazawa and 31.4°C at Komatsu, with the heat concentrated on low, flat land at elevations of 6 m and 3 m.

Another feature of this prefecture is that the peak of the heat does not end in August. At Kanazawa, 38.5°C was recorded on 2 days, September 6, 2022, and September 8, 1902, and Wajima on the Noto Peninsula recorded 38.6°C on September 3, 2020. Kanazawa's temperature statistics began in January 1882, and it is also striking that 2 September days 120 years apart stand side by side with the same value. Wajima also holds the daily rainfall record of the stations covered here, 361.5 mm, set on September 21, 2024.

The wettest month of the year is January at all 3 stations. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 23.7% at Komatsu, 25.2% at Kanazawa, and 25.7% at Wajima, a sky exactly opposite to that of August, when it is around 70%. Even so, the cold does not get severe: the average January minimum is 1.1°C at Kanazawa, 0.5°C at Komatsu, and 0.4°C at Wajima, all around 1°C, and the lowest among the stations covered here, -10.4°C at Wajima, dates from long ago, January 30, 1943.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Ishikawa (Kanazawa)

The normals for Kanazawa represent the stations in Ishikawa. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Temperatures are in degrees Celsius (°C) and precipitation in mm. Blank cells have no normal.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kanazawa changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
