Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Toyama

Toyama Prefecture's heat records include a day that appears in the records across the prefecture. On August 14, 1994, Fushiki observed its record high of 39.7°C, the city of Toyama 39.5°C, and even Kamiichi in the mountains 36.5°C. The prefecture's highest temperature was later broken and is now 39.8°C in the city of Toyama, set on August 4, 2025. With the Tateyama Range at its back, the plain takes in the summer heat across the whole prefecture.

The difference between that plain and the mountain valleys shows clearly in the numbers. For Kamiichi at an elevation of 296 m and the city of Toyama at 9 m, on the 30-year average for 1996–2025 the August maximum is 29.4°C and 31.9°C, and the August minimum 20.7°C and 23.6°C. In January the minimum is -3.1°C at Kamiichi and 0.3°C in the city of Toyama, a gap of 3.4°C, and the prefecture's record low of -14.1°C was also set at Kamiichi, on February 19, 2012.

Precipitation leans toward winter everywhere in the prefecture. The month with the lowest share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is December at all 3 stations: 26.5% at Fushiki, 27.1% in the city of Toyama, and 28.4% at Kamiichi. Conversely, the highest month is August at every station, yet the daily rainfall record among the stations covered here is 225.5 mm at Kamiichi on July 5, 2018, and 207.5 mm at Fushiki on August 23, 2013. The prefecture has 2 faces: winters of persistent precipitation and summers of short, intense downpours.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Toyama changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
