The climate of Niigata
Niigata Prefecture has a strong image as snow country, but its summer temperature records reach the 40°C class. The record high among the stations covered here is 40.4°C at Sanjo, recorded on 2 days, September 3, 2020, and August 23, 2018. Takada also reached 40.3°C on August 14, 2019, the city of Niigata 39.9°C, and Itoigawa 39.3°C. The plains along the Sea of Japan have terrain where dry wind descending over the mountains pushes temperatures up.
Winter shows its true face in the number of days with rain or snow. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation in January is 19.9% at Takada and 20.8% at Itoigawa, which works out to something falling on about 4 days out of 5. Even over the year it falls below half, at 46.9% at Itoigawa and 47.6% at Takada. By contrast, at Aikawa on Sado, August is the driest month at 72.3%, with 56.8% for the year, so the skies on the island differ from those on the mainland.
The cold records cluster on a single day. The record low among the stations covered here is -13.2°C at Takada, followed by -13°C in the city of Niigata, both on February 12, 1942. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the January minimum is 1.3°C at Aikawa and -0.4°C at Sanjo, a spread within the prefecture of only 1.7°C. In this prefecture stretched long and narrow along the sea, the farther a place is from the sea, the colder its nights get.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Niigata changed on November 21, 2002; December 4, 2007; June 24, 2008; June 25, 2008; June 28, 2012 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
