Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Kanagawa

Kanagawa Prefecture's temperature records rest on observations at Yokohama that have continued since August 1896. The record high is 38.1°C on August 6, 2025, followed by 37.4°C on both August 9, 2016, and August 11, 2013. In a record approaching 130 years, what stands out is that the top dates for heat cluster in the 2010s and later.

The cold side is fixed in an entirely different era. The record low is -8.2°C on January 24, 1927, followed by -7.2°C on January 27, 1900, and -7°C on January 22, 1922. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the January minimum is 2.8°C and the maximum 10.3°C, and in winter in this city on Tokyo Bay, most days do not fall below freezing.

In summer, the warmth of the nights stands out. The average August minimum is 24.6°C, only 6.8°C below the average maximum of 31.4°C, so the heat does not fully escape even after sunset. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 71.9% for the year and a dry 85.4% in January, and even June, the lowest month, keeps 61.8%. Substantial rain comes in autumn, and the daily rainfall record is 287.2 mm on September 26, 1958.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Yokohama changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
