Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.
The climate of Tokyo
Tokyo stretches long and narrow from the Kanto Mountains to the islands far to the south, so different climates coexist within the same metropolis. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the January minimum is 15.8°C at Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Islands and -2.2°C at Ogochi in the mountains of Tama, a difference that reaches 18°C. Even the record low at Chichijima Island is 7.8°C, set on February 8, 1969. As of August 2026, it is a station with no record below freezing.
On the mountain side to the west, by contrast, extreme numbers line up. Tokyo's record high is 40.8°C at Ome on July 23, 2018, and its record low is -11.6°C, recorded on February 8, 1984, at Ogochi, at an elevation of 530 m. The normal August maximum is also 31.9°C at Tokyo in the city center and 28.7°C at Ogochi, a difference of 3.2°C, so traveling just a few dozen kilometers toward the mountains changes how summer feels.
Rainfall divides both east to west and north to south. The daily rainfall record is 556 mm at Ogochi, and on October 12, 2019, Ome also recorded 384.5 mm. The annual share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 72.2% in Tokyo but 54.3% at Hachijojima Island, falling to 46.9% in October, its lowest month. While the city center has long runs of dry days, the islands have a season when rain comes about 1 day in 2.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.
Monthly normals for Tokyo (Tokyo)
The normals for Tokyo represent the stations in Tokyo. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.
Temperature (monthly normals)
The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Tokyo changed on November 1, 2007; December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008; December 2, 2014 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
