The climate of Saitama
Summer in Saitama Prefecture gets very hot everywhere. The record high is 41.4°C at Hatoyama on August 5, 2025, and Kumagaya also observed 41.1°C on July 23, 2018. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 32.8°C in Kumagaya, 32.4°C in Hatoyama, and 31.4°C even in mountain-ringed Chichibu, a difference within the prefecture of only 1.4°C. Behind this is its inland position, away from the sea, where warmed air tends to stagnate.
In winter cold, however, the order within the prefecture does not follow the height of the land. The average January minimum is -4°C at Hatoyama, at an elevation of 44 m, slightly below the -3.9°C of Chichibu at 232 m, and a full 3.6°C apart from Kumagaya's -0.4°C. In lowlands surrounded by hills, cold air pools at the bottom on clear, calm nights. The prefecture's record low is -15.8°C at Chichibu, and on January 27, 1954, Kumagaya also recorded -10.5°C.
Low rainfall is another inland trait. The annual share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is high, at 74.3% in Kumagaya, 73.8% in Chichibu, and 72.9% in Hatoyama, reaching 91.1% in Kumagaya in January. The amounts gather on the mountain side: the daily rainfall record is 519.7 mm at Chichibu, set on September 15, 1947. Hatoyama's highest is 374.5 mm on July 12, 2022, and Kumagaya's is 301.5 mm on September 12, 1982; the closer a place is to the mountain slopes, the more rain it takes in a single day.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Kumagaya changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
