Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Tochigi

Tochigi Prefecture holds both lowland heat and mountaintop coolness within its borders. The record high is 41°C at Sano, in the southwest of the plain, set on July 29, 2024. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 32°C at Sano and 23.2°C at Oku-Nikko, at an elevation of 1,292 m, a gap that widens to 8.8°C. Terrain that lets you travel between a town at an elevation of 68 m and a plateau high in the mountains without leaving the prefecture creates this spread.

Winter at Oku-Nikko is far removed from what the lowlands know. The average January maximum is -0.2°C and the average minimum -7.9°C, so the temperature does not rise above 0°C even in the daytime. The record low of -18.7°C was set on March 15, 1984, a date after spring had already begun on the calendar. The average January minimum is -2.1°C in Utsunomiya and -2.3°C in Sano, so the mountaintop is more than 5°C colder.

Rainfall also swaps seasons between the mountains and the lowlands. The daily rainfall record is 607 mm at Nasu Highlands on August 27, 1998, and Oku-Nikko also observed 519.2 mm on September 16, 1948. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation drops in July to 41% at Nasu Highlands and 47% at Oku-Nikko; summer, when air lifted along the mountain slopes builds rain clouds, is the rainy season of the mountains. On the lowlands, by contrast, January is the driest month, with the share reaching 88.9% in Utsunomiya and 89.3% in Sano.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Tochigi (Utsunomiya)

The normals for Utsunomiya represent the stations in Tochigi. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Utsunomiya changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
