Range of records by station

Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Yamagata

Yamagata Prefecture has 2 records in the 40°C range. The city of Yamagata's 40.8°C was observed on July 25, 1933, and 40.1°C at Sakata, facing the Sea of Japan, on August 3, 1978. The 2 places, a basin and a coast, differ in character yet have both reached the same heights. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, too, the August maximum is 30.9°C in the city of Yamagata, 30.1°C in Sakata, and 30°C in Shinjo in the northern interior, so every part of the prefecture lines up at 30°C or higher.

In winter the same prefecture shows the opposite face. The record low is -20.2°C at Shinjo on February 14, 1976, and -20°C in the city of Yamagata on January 29, 1891. The normal January minimum, too, is -3.7°C in Shinjo and -3.1°C in the city of Yamagata, while coastal Sakata goes no lower than -0.6°C, a clear difference from the interior. Shinjo's average January maximum is also only 2°C, so the cold continues through the day. This is the difference between a seaside on the edge of a warm current and an interior surrounded by mountains.

The difference in winter skies is even more striking. The share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation drops in January to 20.5% in Shinjo and 21.9% in Sakata, so days without precipitation become the rare ones. Even over the year it falls below half, at 47.8% in Shinjo and 48.6% in Sakata. The city of Yamagata, doubly enclosed by the Ou Mountains and the Dewa Mountains, has 62.6% over the year and keeps 48.7% even in December, its lowest month. Summer heavy rain gathers in the same places: the daily rainfall record is 361 mm at Shinjo and 288 mm at Sakata, both on July 25, 2024.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Monthly normals for Yamagata (Yamagata)

The normals for Yamagata represent the stations in Yamagata. Normals for the other stations are on each station's page.

Temperature (monthly normals)

The lines show monthly normals: the upper line is the monthly mean of the daily high and the lower line the monthly mean of the daily low, and the middle line is the monthly mean temperature. Touch the point for a month to read its values. Normals are the 1991–2020 average.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Yamagata changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
