Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.

The climate of Akita

Akita Prefecture's climate may be best expressed by its skies rather than its temperatures. The annual share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 52.7%, which works out to roughly half the days with rain or snow and half without. In December this share drops to 29.3%, and days without precipitation become the minority. Because the prefecture lies where the northwesterly seasonal wind carries moisture from the Sea of Japan into the Ou Mountains, winter is the main season for precipitation, a calendar that is the reverse of the Pacific side's.

The share is highest in June, at 67.3%. At a time talked about across Japan as the rainy season, the city of Akita instead enters a month with plenty of clear weather. While the band of rainy-season clouds lingers south of Honshu, the Sea of Japan side often lies in the gap away from it, creating a period when the name of the season and the actual sky do not match. Summer rain comes not so much in the rainy season as in concentrated bursts, as on July 15, 2023, when the daily rainfall record of 188.5 mm fell.

Temperatures also swing widely: the record high is 38.5°C on August 23, 2023, and the record low is -24.6°C on February 5, 1888. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 29.7°C, so the record day exceeded the normal benchmark by more than 8°C. In January, the average maximum is 3.2°C and the average minimum -2.1°C, so the temperature barely rises even in the daytime. This whole range fits into a seemingly mild seaside location at an elevation of 6 m.

Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)

The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Akita changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.

The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
