Each bar is one station: the left dot is its record low and the right dot its record high. The statistical period differs by station, depending on when observations began or the station moved. The dates are on each station's page.
The climate of Aomori
Aomori Prefecture divides into Tsugaru, Shimokita, and Nanbu, each with its own climate, and the records look different in each. The record high among the stations covered here is 37.9°C at Fukaura, facing the Sea of Japan, recorded on August 3, 1978. The lowest is -24.7°C in the city of Aomori, at the head of Mutsu Bay, on February 23, 1931. Fukaura's own record low goes no lower than -10.5°C because the Sea of Japan, with its warm current, lies right in front of it and keeps nights from getting very cold, so Fukaura, which leads the stations covered here in heat, is mild in the cold.
Lining up the normal temperatures shows that the differences within the prefecture depend less on latitude than on how each place faces the sea. On the 30-year average for 1996–2025, the August maximum is 28.2°C in the city of Aomori and 26.2°C in Mutsu on the Shimokita Peninsula, a difference of 2°C, and the January minimum is -2.4°C at Fukaura against -5°C at Mutsu, the lowest among the stations covered here. Open to the sea on three sides, Shimokita does not trap summer heat, and in winter it takes the northwesterly wind head-on.
The difference in how rain and snow fall is even clearer. The daily rainfall record is 312 mm at Fukaura, on August 9, 2022. Meanwhile, the annual share of days with less than 1 mm of precipitation is 72.3% in Hachinohe and 55.5% in Fukaura, and in Hachinohe it rises to 79.6% in January. In the Nanbu area, where the Ou Mountains block snow clouds from the Sea of Japan, winter is the season with the most clear weather, a calendar exactly opposite to that of Tsugaru.
Record values in this description are based on data collected as of September 2026, and the normal statistics on the 30 years 1996–2025.

Annual mean temperature (1996–2025)
The yearly average of the daily mean temperature (the line is broken in years with many missing values). Observing conditions at Aomori changed on December 4, 2007; June 25, 2008 (for example, a relocation or new instruments), so the statistics may not be continuous across those dates.
The normals listed here are averages over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. They are fixed values that stay the same until the next revision of the normals, and they show how warm or cold that month usually is in that area.
